Indian cricketer receives reprimand from ICC for dangerously throwing ball prior to 2nd ODI against England.

India's fast bowler Gurnoor Brar has received an official warning from the International Cricket Council (ICC) following a breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first One Day International (ODI) against England on Tuesday. The incident occurred in the eighth over of England's innings when Brar, after delivering the ball, threw it towards batter Ben Duckett, an action deemed "inappropriate and dangerous" by match officials.

As a result of this incident, Brar has been assigned one demerit point on his disciplinary record. The charge was initiated by the on-field umpires, along with the third and fourth umpires, under Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct. This specific rule addresses the act of “throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and or dangerous manner during an international match.” A Level 1 offence can lead to various penalties, including an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50 percent of the player's match fee, and the assignment of one or two demerit points.

Consequences of Demerit Points

Accumulating four or more demerit points within a 24-month period can result in the conversion of those points into suspension points, which may lead to a ban from matches. Specifically, two suspension points equate to a suspension for one Test match or two ODIs or T20Is, depending on which format occurs first. Notably, demerit points are cleared from a player's record after a period of 24 months.

Despite the disciplinary action, Brar showcased his skills on the field, claiming two wickets as India triumphed over England by six wickets, thereby taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The teams are scheduled to face off again in the second ODI in Cardiff on Thursday. The ICC confirmed that Brar acknowledged the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Richie Richardson from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
