India, led by Shubman Gill, breaks England's 12-year unbeaten streak at Edgbaston with a six-wicket victory.

In a stunning display of resilience, India ended England's impressive 12-year unbeaten streak in Men's One Day Internationals (ODIs) at Edgbaston, securing a six-wicket victory in the first ODI on the 1st of the month. Following a disappointing 4-0 defeat in the preceding T20I series, the Indian team was eager to turn their fortunes around, and they did so emphatically, halting England's dominance at their home ground.

England had not lost an ODI at Edgbaston since 2015, with their last defeat at the venue coming against India, who triumphed by nine wickets on September 2, 2014. The recent match marked a significant moment, as India not only ended the home team's unbeaten run but also achieved their sixth consecutive ODI victory over England, setting a new record for the longest winning streak against the Three Lions. Previously, India had managed five consecutive wins against England on three occasions.

England's Early Promise Derailed

The match began with England showing promise, as they reached 61 runs without losing a wicket. However, a sudden collapse ensued, with the team slumping to 80 for 5, thanks to India's bowlers who executed a strategic dismantling of the batting order. Joe Root emerged as a stabilizing force, scoring an unbeaten 76, while Liam Dawson contributed a crucial 68. Their partnership of 111 runs helped England recover to a total of 258 before being bowled out. Axar Patel was instrumental in this turnaround, claiming four wickets for 62 runs, effectively breaking the backbone of the English batting lineup.

India's Steady Chase Seals the Victory

In response, India’s innings was anchored by captain Shubman Gill, who scored 80 runs before retiring due to cramps. Although India faced a brief setback at 160 for 4, the partnership between Axar Patel and Washington Sundar proved decisive. The duo forged an unbeaten 102-run partnership, with Axar finishing on 57 not out and Sundar on 52 not out, leading India to victory with 28 balls to spare. This match also marked only the second time since 2016 that India successfully chased down a target of over 250 runs without either Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli scoring a half-century, the first instance occurring against England at Old Trafford in 2022.
