India implement comprehensive workload management strategy for New Zealand tour

India’s coaching staff has unveiled a strategic blueprint to manage player workloads during the upcoming tour of New Zealand, which includes a demanding schedule of five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Test matches. With the Test series set to commence on November 19—just four days after the conclusion of the ODI leg—the team is prioritising physical readiness and injury prevention across the squad.

Bowling coach Morne Morkel confirmed that the management is considering keeping a dedicated group of bowlers in New Zealand as backup cover. This contingency planning is designed to ensure the team remains resilient throughout the tour, with final decisions on the bowling unit’s composition to be made once the squad assesses local conditions closer to the start of the series.

Strategic rotation and player readiness

The Indian team has been preparing for this tour for several months, with a focus on ensuring bowlers are match-ready for the demands of red-ball cricket. To facilitate this, some players have been integrated into the India A side to gain necessary experience. Furthermore, Morkel outlined a rotation policy for the 50-over format, which will serve as a platform for bowlers to build their fitness and rhythm ahead of the Test matches.

Addressing the specific needs of the squad, Morkel emphasised that every bowler has been briefed on their individual workload expectations. He noted that the team has developed a robust, bulletproof plan to ensure that every member of the bowling attack, including spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, is prepared for the rigours of both the white-ball and red-ball fixtures.

The bowling coach also highlighted the potential for Arshdeep Singh to play a role in the Test setup. Morkel praised the pacer’s work ethic and consistency, noting that he is firmly in the conversation for red-ball selection should the team require his services. While acknowledging that plans can sometimes face unforeseen challenges, Morkel expressed confidence in the current backup structures and the overall preparedness of the bowling unit to handle the transition between formats.
