India bowlers set unwanted record as New Zealand post massive T20I total

India’s bowling unit endured a difficult outing in the opening T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch on Thursday, entering the record books for an unwanted milestone. For the first time in the history of men’s T20I cricket, five Indian bowlers conceded 40 or more runs in a single innings as the hosts surged to a formidable total of 225/8.

The challenging conditions for the visitors were underscored by the fact that this specific statistical anomaly has only occurred 13 times in the history of the format, but never before had five Indian bowlers been subjected to such punishment in one match. The figures highlighted a collective struggle to contain the New Zealand batting lineup, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceding 49 runs, Axar Patel 51, Arshdeep Singh 45, and both Mayank Yadav and Nitish Reddy leaking 40 runs apiece.

New Zealand dominance in Christchurch

The hosts capitalised on the lack of experience in the Indian attack, particularly in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. Despite some early movement available for the bowlers, New Zealand’s top order remained composed before accelerating. Finn Allen provided the initial impetus with a brisk 45 off 24 deliveries, while Glenn Phillips anchored the innings with an unbeaten 82 off just 40 balls.

The tone was set early when Tim Seifert, who contributed 24 off 17, helped the hosts navigate the powerplay. Although Mayank Yadav managed to remove Seifert late in the fifth over, the damage was already underway. Axar Patel’s introduction in the powerplay proved costly, as he conceded two sixes, helping New Zealand reach 65/1 after the first six overs.

The momentum continued throughout the innings as the visitors failed to stem the flow of runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, returning to international cricket after a nearly four-year hiatus, found the going tough, finishing with 0/49 from his four overs. Arshdeep Singh, despite picking up the wicket of Daryl Mitchell, was also unable to restrict the scoring, particularly against Bevon Jacobs, who struck a six off his first ball and finished with a quickfire 31 off 16 deliveries.

New Zealand’s final total of 225/8 stands as their highest T20I score on home soil and matches the joint-highest total ever recorded against India in the format. A late-innings surge, which saw the hosts accumulate 67 runs in the final five overs, ensured they crossed the 200-run mark comfortably, leaving India with a significant task ahead in the remainder of the series.
