India A denied victory by bad light in first unofficial Test against New Zealand A

India A were left frustrated on the final day of the first unofficial Test in Lincoln, as fading light prevented them from securing a victory against New Zealand A. With the hosts reeling at 187/9 in pursuit of a 313-run target, the umpires were forced to call a premature end to proceedings, leaving the visitors just one wicket shy of a remarkable comeback win.

The draw brought a tense conclusion to a match that saw India A recover from a dismal start. After being dismissed for just 113 in their first innings, the tourists faced a significant 204-run deficit when New Zealand A posted 317 in response. However, a dominant batting display in the second innings shifted the momentum entirely, setting the stage for a thrilling final-day pursuit.

Padikkal leads remarkable turnaround

The cornerstone of India A’s resurgence was a magnificent 199 from Devdutt Padikkal. The left-hander anchored the second innings with a composed 248-ball knock, featuring 24 boundaries and three sixes. His efforts were bolstered by a crucial 215-run partnership with Sai Sudharsan, who contributed 91, while Yash Rathod and Washington Sundar added valuable half-centuries to help post a total of 516.

Padikkal’s innings, which ended just one run short of a double century, provided India A with a commanding lead and a target of 313 for the hosts. Despite the disappointment of falling just shy of the milestone, his contribution proved vital in transforming the match from a potential defeat into a position of dominance.

New Zealand A survive final-day pressure

Tasked with chasing 313, New Zealand A struggled early against a disciplined Indian bowling attack. Auqib Nabi made significant inroads, claiming three wickets in the second innings, while Padikkal showcased his versatility by picking up two wickets, including his maiden first-class scalp. As wickets continued to tumble, the visitors appeared poised to complete a dramatic victory.

However, Curtis Heaphy provided stubborn resistance for the hosts, remaining unbeaten on 90 from 187 deliveries. Alongside Jayden Lennox, Heaphy successfully navigated the final overs as the light deteriorated. By the time play was abandoned after 65 overs, New Zealand A had reached 187/9. With the series now level in terms of the result, both sides will shift their focus to the second unofficial Test, which is set to commence this Saturday.
