Ex-India star highlights the significant advantage Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has expressed his support for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to continue their One Day International (ODI) careers, particularly with the 2027 World Cup on the horizon. Harbhajan, who is now 46, emphasized that performance should be the primary criterion for selection rather than age, during a recent interview with PTI.

The discussion surrounding the future of Kohli and Rohit has intensified as both players currently participate in only one format of the game. Harbhajan, who has recently completed his autobiography set for release later this year, drew parallels between the two Indian stars and football legend Lionel Messi. He noted that Messi, at 39, showcased remarkable skill and leadership by guiding Argentina to the finals of the recent World Cup.

Performance Over Age

As the 2027 ODI World Cup approaches, Rohit will be 41 and Kohli 39. Harbhajan firmly believes that their age should not overshadow their ability to perform at elite levels. "Whoever the player is, I believe the marker should be performance, not age," he stated. He highlighted that the expectations placed on Kohli and Rohit would be significantly higher than those on younger players, such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, despite the latter's promising talent.

Legacy of Fitness and Experience

Harbhajan credited Kohli with revolutionizing the fitness culture within the Indian team, attributing 90 percent of the fitness revolution to his influence. "My idea of fitness was endurance, but Virat made this team believe that if you are fit, you can excel," he remarked. He urged current head coach Gautam Gambhir to leverage the experience of both Rohit and Kohli, should they continue to meet performance standards.

With a career that includes 416 Test wickets and 269 ODI wickets, Harbhajan underscored the importance of fitness and performance in determining the future of the veteran players. "If they can match the fitness levels of younger players like Shreyas Iyer or Yashasvi Jaiswal, then their age should not be a concern," he concluded. He also noted that both Rohit and Kohli would instinctively know when it is time to retire from the game.
