Jurel Details the Verbal Exchange
Speaking to former India batter Aakash Chopra, Jurel clarified that the confrontation was sparked by persistent verbal abuse from the Sri Lankan pacer. According to Jurel, Jaiswal had initially been walking off the field without incident until the nature of Fernando’s celebration triggered a reaction.
Jurel explained that Jaiswal informed him the bowler was abusing him nonstop after the wicket fell. The wicketkeeper noted that while Jaiswal was prepared to accept standard competitive aggression following a dismissal, he drew a firm line at personal verbal abuse. Jaiswal reportedly told the bowler that while taking a wicket warrants celebration, it does not justify the use of abusive language.
Jaiswal’s Approach to On-Field Aggression
Reflecting on his teammate's temperament, Jurel emphasized that Jaiswal is not the type of player to initiate verbal conflicts. Having played alongside the opener for the Rajasthan Royals, Jurel described Jaiswal as a focused individual who remains entirely in the zone while batting. He maintained that Jaiswal only engages in such exchanges when he feels provoked by an opponent.
Jurel’s comments align with the view that Jaiswal is a competitive player who will respond if challenged, but he does not seek out confrontation. The incident in Colombo was significant enough to draw the attention of match officials, resulting in both Jaiswal and Fernando being sanctioned by the International Cricket Council for breaching the Code of Conduct. The intervention by players from both sides at the time successfully de-escalated the situation, bringing an end to the tense exchange on the field.
