In a thrilling display of batting prowess, Devdutt Padikkal concluded his innings with a remarkable score of 167 runs off 230 balls during the opening Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle. This performance marked Padikkal's first Test century, achieved on the first day of the match, and he continued to impress on the rain-affected second day, surpassing the 150-run mark for the first time in his career. His innings included 15 boundaries and a six, showcasing his ability to anchor the Indian innings despite the challenges posed by the weather.

With his impressive score, Padikkal became only the third Indian batsman to reach 150 or more runs while batting at No. 3 against Sri Lanka. He joined the ranks of cricket legends Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara, who previously achieved similar milestones, with Dravid scoring 177 in Ahmedabad in 2009 and Pujara making 153 in Galle in 2017. Padikkal's innings was particularly noteworthy given the lengthy interruptions due to rain, which delayed the start of play for over four hours on the second day.

The Sri Lankan bowlers finally managed to break through when Prabath Jayasuriya dismissed Padikkal. The young batsman attempted to advance down the pitch, but Jayasuriya cleverly adjusted his delivery, resulting in Padikkal missing the ball and allowing wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella to execute a swift stumping. As he left the field, Padikkal received a standing ovation from the crowd in Galle, with his teammates also acknowledging his outstanding performance.

Following the resumption of play, India encountered further difficulties as they lost two key players in quick succession. Rishabh Pant was dismissed for 39 runs after being caught by Sonal Dinusha while attempting a shot off Keshara Nuwantha. Meanwhile, KL Rahul, who had retired hurt due to cramps on the first day, returned to the crease but fell short of a century, scoring 82 runs off 175 balls before being caught by Nishan Fernando at short leg off Nuwantha's bowling.

Padikkal's performance not only highlighted his potential but also marked a significant moment in Indian cricket, as he became the first Indian to score a Test century on Independence Day and only the second overall to achieve an international century on August 15, following Virat Kohli.
