Pat Cummins acknowledges Australia’s surprising loss, stating they were outperformed in every aspect of the game.

In a remarkable display of skill, Bangladesh secured a historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in the first Test match held at Marrara Oval in Darwin on Sunday. This win marks Bangladesh's first Test triumph on Australian soil and only their second overall against the Australian team, with their previous victory occurring in Dhaka in 2017.

Following the match, Australian captain Pat Cummins acknowledged that his team was outperformed in every aspect of the game. He pointed to the team's first innings as a critical moment, emphasizing the need for longer batting spells after Bangladesh's bowlers made significant early breakthroughs. "I thought our preparation was pretty much spot on. I thought it was excellent. So, no excuses. They played really well," Cummins stated. He noted that the pitch conditions on the first day posed challenges, but ultimately, the team needed to adapt and bat longer than they did.

Australia's first innings ended at a disappointing 198 runs after Cummins opted to bat first upon winning the toss. In response, Bangladesh dominated with a total of 426 runs, establishing a commanding 228-run lead that proved crucial for their victory. Although Australia showed some resilience in their second innings, scoring 284 runs with Cameron Green contributing a century, they were unable to close the gap significantly. Bangladesh's Mehidy Hasan Miraz played a pivotal role, taking five wickets and limiting Australia’s lead to just 56 runs before the visitors chased down the target in a mere 14.2 overs.

Cummins reflected on the match, acknowledging that Bangladesh maintained control after gaining their advantage. "They outplayed us in all facets, really. I thought they were really patient and quite disciplined," he remarked. As the team prepares for the second Test in Mackay, Queensland, starting on August 22, Cummins indicated that the batting lineup would be scrutinized for potential adjustments. "We're pretty good at bouncing back, so no doubt the batters and every group will get together and have a good think about this one and where we can improve," he added.

Despite the team's overall struggles, Cummins praised Josh Hazlewood for reaching the milestone of 300 Test wickets, highlighting his six-wicket performance across both innings. He also commended Green for his impressive 104 runs, noting that his innings showcased his talent and potential. "Just needed a couple of us to hang around with him, but it was fantastic," Cummins concluded.
