"Currently, the likelihood of Washington traveling to Sri Lanka is very low. The team management has been advised to prepare for his absence," a BCCI insider revealed. The medical team is particularly cautious, recalling past instances where players have suffered setbacks after rushing back from injuries. "Washington was selected for the second Test with the understanding that his fitness would be a close call. He has had limited play since his injury in England last month, and his workload is being gradually increased," the source added.
Selectors' Strategy and Team Composition
It appears that the selectors are not planning to name a replacement for Sundar if he is officially ruled out. The squad for the Test series already consists of 15 players, with Sundar designated as the 16th member should he be fit to join. "A thorough evaluation will take place next week to determine if it is sensible to include him in the Test without any prior match experience," the source explained, emphasizing the need for careful consideration of the team's situation in Sri Lanka.
Uncertain Returns for Bumrah and Akash Deep
In addition to Sundar's situation, there is still no clear timeline for the return of pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep. Bumrah is recovering from a knee injury sustained in England, while Akash Deep has been sidelined since January due to a stress fracture in his back. The CoE had been working on increasing Bumrah's bowling workload in preparation for the Sri Lanka series, but it has become evident that he may not be ready in time. "It has been a considerable period since he last bowled in longer formats, and the CoE is exercising extreme caution with his rehabilitation," the source noted.
As for Akash Deep, the CoE had aimed to have him fit for the Sri Lanka tour, but that goal has not been met. The team management has not received any updates regarding his recovery timeline. "Returning from a back injury is challenging, and the hope is that he will be available for the crucial New Zealand tour," the source concluded, highlighting the importance of both players' fitness for the upcoming matches.
