BCCI parts ways with team physio as injury concerns mount ahead of Afghanistan T20Is

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opted to part ways with team physio Kamlesh Jain following a period of persistent injury concerns affecting the national squad. The decision follows reports that BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had previously raised concerns regarding the frequency of injuries sustained by top-tier players under the current medical management.

The leadership change comes at a critical juncture as the Indian team prepares for a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, which is scheduled to commence this Sunday. The squad held its inaugural practice session at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Thursday, marking the start of their final preparations for the upcoming international fixtures.

Squad updates and injury setbacks

While the medical department undergoes restructuring, the team received a significant boost with the return of Jasprit Bumrah and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Both players have been declared fit following extensive rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) and are set to join the squad for the Asian Games in Japan shortly after the conclusion of the Afghanistan series.

However, the team continues to face fitness challenges. Fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the upcoming T20Is after sustaining an injury during a match simulation test at the CoE on Tuesday. In response to his withdrawal, the selectors have named Yash Thakur as his replacement. These recurring fitness issues have created ongoing difficulties for the selection committee and management as they attempt to solidify the core roster for next year’s ODI World Cup in southern Africa.

Logistical challenges and team preparations

The management is currently balancing multiple formats, with head coach Gautam Gambhir focusing on key personnel including T20I captain Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar. The team faces a complex schedule, as several first-choice ODI players—including Bumrah, Iyer, Washington, Axar Patel, Ishan Kishan, and Reddy—will be unavailable for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies, which begins on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram. Furthermore, the team is currently operating without fast bowling coach Morne Morkel, who is reportedly awaiting visa renewal.

Off the field, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has confirmed that the first T20I on September 13 will proceed as planned. This announcement follows discussions with the Delhi traffic police, who had initially requested a rescheduling of the match due to security and traffic management requirements surrounding the BRICS summit. The DDCA has since received assurances of support from local authorities to ensure the event proceeds without disruption.
