Arshdeep Singh eyes historic 150-wicket milestone in T20I series against New Zealand

Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh stands on the threshold of a significant career milestone as the national side prepares for a five-match T20 International series against New Zealand. The left-arm pacer requires only five more dismissals to become the first Indian bowler to reach the 150-wicket mark in the shortest format of the game.

The series is set to commence this Thursday in Christchurch, with Arshdeep expected to play a pivotal role in India's bowling attack. The pacer has successfully recovered from a shoulder injury sustained during the fourth T20I against the West Indies. Although he was named in the playing XI for the subsequent fifth T20I in Bengaluru, that encounter was ultimately abandoned due to rain.

A record-breaking trajectory in T20 cricket

Since his international debut in 2022, Arshdeep has cemented his status as a cornerstone of India's T20 setup. Having already surpassed all other Indian bowlers to become the country's leading wicket-taker in the format at the start of 2025, he currently holds a tally of 145 wickets from 99 appearances. His career average stands at an impressive 20.30, bolstered by two four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul, with career-best figures of 5/51.

Should he secure the necessary five wickets during the upcoming series, Arshdeep will become the ninth bowler in history to reach the 150-wicket milestone in T20 Internationals. The global list is currently headed by Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, who has claimed 197 wickets in 118 matches.

Proven success against the Black Caps

Arshdeep’s track record against New Zealand suggests he is well-positioned to reach the target. In 10 previous T20I outings against the Black Caps, he has claimed 17 wickets at an average of 20.00. This includes his career-best performance of 5/51, as well as a four-wicket haul. His experience on New Zealand soil is also notable, having taken four wickets in two matches, including a return of 4/37 in Napier in 2022.

Beyond the international stage, the Punjab Kings bowler is also closing in on a broader career achievement. With 288 wickets across 223 total T20 matches, he is just 12 scalps away from reaching 300 wickets in the format. His form throughout 2025 has remained consistent, with 35 wickets in 27 T20Is at an average of 24.68 and an economy rate of 9.20. As the series in New Zealand begins, all eyes will be on the left-armer as he looks to etch his name into the record books.
