Former India leg-spinner
Mishra, who first broke into the international setup in 2003, found himself sidelined shortly after his debut. The transition from the national stage to the domestic circuit proved difficult, and his frustration grew as he was overlooked for various domestic tournaments and India A zonal selections. During this time, the spinner struggled to reconcile his ambition with his lack of opportunities, leading to a prolonged period of introspection.
A turning point in domestic cricket
The turning point for Mishra came following a blunt but necessary conversation with a national selector. While the spinner had been preoccupied with the desire to regain his place in the Indian team, he had lost focus on the fundamental requirement of performing consistently at the domestic level. The selector’s feedback served as a wake-up call, forcing Mishra to confront the reality of his performances rather than dwelling on the perceived injustices of his exclusion.
Reflecting on the experience during a conversation with former teammate Aakash Chopra, Mishra admitted that he had been trapped in a cycle of questioning his own actions. He noted that he was playing in various matches but remained mentally distracted by the question of what he had done wrong. Once he shifted his mindset to prioritize his domestic output over his international aspirations, he began to see a change in his trajectory.
Resurgence and international career
By refocusing his efforts on his game and committing to the domestic circuit, Mishra successfully rebuilt his form. His dedication eventually paved the way for a return to the Indian national team in 2008, nearly five years after his initial debut. This comeback marked the beginning of a sustained period at the highest level, during which he represented his country across all three formats.
Over the course of his international career, Mishra featured in 22 Test matches, 36 One Day Internationals, and 10 T20 Internationals. He concluded his international tenure with a total of 156 wickets, a testament to the resilience he showed in overcoming his early-career setbacks to establish himself as a consistent performer for India.
