Abhishek Sharma sets T20I six-hitting record as India chases massive New Zealand total

Abhishek Sharma etched his name into the record books during the opening T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch on Thursday, becoming the player to hit the first ball of an innings for a six on the most occasions in the format's history. Facing Matt Henry on the final delivery of the opening over, the left-hander lofted a full, wide delivery over the cover boundary to secure the milestone.

This aggressive start marked the seventh time Sharma has cleared the ropes with his very first delivery in a T20I, allowing him to surpass Afghanistan’s Shafiqullah Shinwari, who holds six such instances. Suryakumar Yadav currently sits third on the list with five, while Paul Stirling, Colin Munro, and Mohammad Naveed have each achieved the feat four times.

New Zealand's batting dominance

The record-breaking moment occurred during India’s pursuit of a daunting 226-run target set by the hosts. New Zealand’s innings was defined by explosive power-hitting, culminating in a total of 225/8. This score represents the joint-highest ever recorded against India in T20Is and stands as New Zealand’s highest-ever total on home soil.

Finn Allen provided the initial momentum with a brisk 45 off 24 balls, while Glenn Phillips anchored the latter half of the innings, finishing unbeaten on 82 from just 40 deliveries. The Indian bowling attack, missing the services of Jasprit Bumrah, found it difficult to restrict the scoring, particularly in the death overs where the hosts added 67 runs in the final five.

Statistical struggles and partnership milestones

The match proved difficult for the Indian bowlers, as five different players conceded 40 or more runs in their respective spells—a first for the nation in T20I cricket. Axar Patel ended as the most expensive, returning figures of 1/51, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar leaked 49 runs. Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav, and Nitish Reddy also struggled, each conceding 40 runs or more.

Despite the bowling woes, India’s top order showed intent. Sharma and Sanju Samson combined for a rapid 93-run opening partnership in just 5.5 overs. This stand marked their fifth 50-plus opening partnership of 2026, equalling the record for the most such stands by an Indian pair in a single calendar year. The partnership was eventually broken by Michael Bracewell, who dismissed Sharma for 29 off 12 balls, an innings that included three sixes and two fours. At the time of reporting, India reached 128/4 after 11 overs.
