Aakash Chopra Urges India to Rotate Squad for Fourth T20I Against New Zealand

With an unassailable 3-0 lead secured in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, India is now in a position to experiment with its lineup. Former India opener Aakash Chopra has suggested that the team management should utilize the remaining matches to provide opportunities to younger squad members, specifically calling for the inclusion of fast bowler Mayank Yadav.

Chopra, speaking on his YouTube channel, proposed that the team make at least one tactical change for the upcoming fourth T20I, scheduled for Friday, October 30, in Auckland. He recommended that Arshdeep Singh be rested to allow Mayank Yadav to return to the playing XI. Mayank previously featured in the series opener, where he returned figures of 1/40 from his four overs. Chopra argued that given the series is already decided, it is the ideal time to test the depth of the bowling attack.

Focus on Rotation and Selection Challenges

Beyond the bowling changes, Chopra addressed the potential return of wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan. While he maintained that Kishan should be an automatic selection if fit, he acknowledged that integrating him into the side presents a significant selection dilemma. To accommodate Kishan alongside the current top-order lineup, which includes Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Shreyas Iyer, and Tilak Varma, Chopra suggested that the team might need to implement a rotation policy to ensure all players receive adequate time in the middle.

The former cricketer also defended the current batting order against calls for changes. Addressing suggestions from some fans to drop Shreyas Iyer or Tilak Varma, Chopra dismissed the notion, highlighting that Tilak Varma was instrumental in India’s recent victory. He noted that while Shreyas has struggled in his last two outings, dropping him would be a premature decision. Ultimately, Chopra stated that the final call regarding the batting lineup rests with Shreyas and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Backing for Experienced Seamers

Despite the focus on youth, Chopra expressed support for the continued inclusion of senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Although the experienced bowler has struggled to find rhythm in the series, taking only one wicket across the first three matches with an economy rate of 11.58, Chopra believes he should play all five games. He argued that the conditions in New Zealand, which offer little assistance to spinners, require fast bowlers who can effectively target the side boundaries with short-pitched deliveries.

As India prepares for the fourth T20I, the match serves as a valuable opportunity for the team management to assess bench strength and manage the physical workload of their frontline players before the series concludes.
