PV Sindhu Addresses Controversy Surrounding World Badminton Championships Held in India, Shares Insights

The World Badminton Championships is set to make its long-awaited return to India after a gap of 17 years, with the prestigious event scheduled to take place from August 17 to 23 in New Delhi. The Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, which previously hosted the India Open badminton tournament earlier this year, will serve as the venue for this international competition.

In preparation for the championships, the stadium has undergone significant renovations, addressing previous concerns regarding hygiene and safety. Earlier this year, the venue faced criticism due to issues such as unsanitary conditions and the presence of monkeys, which disrupted play during the India Open. To combat these challenges, the Badminton Association of India and the Sports Authority of India have implemented a series of measures aimed at ensuring a smooth experience for players and spectators alike.

Among the unique strategies employed to deter monkeys from the stadium area is the hiring of three trained monkey whisperers. These specialists use mimicry to imitate the calls of langurs, a larger species of monkey that rhesus macaques tend to avoid. This approach is part of a broader effort that includes the installation of heavy-duty polyethylene bird nets and non-toxic deterrent gels to further enhance the venue's safety.

Despite the proactive measures taken by the organizers, some social media users have expressed skepticism regarding the focus on wildlife management. However, double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has come to the defense of the event's organizers, emphasizing that every major sporting event faces its own set of local challenges. She pointed out that similar methods have been successfully used at other prestigious events, such as Wimbledon, which employs a hawk named Rufus to keep pigeons at bay.

In her remarks on social media platform X, Sindhu stated, "I genuinely don't understand the outrage. This is just one additional measure on top of the countless measures already being taken." She expressed confidence that the World Championships would showcase the best of Indian hospitality and assured fans that the event would meet international standards.
