India's premier men's doubles team, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, is set to lead the nation's charge at the Japan Open Super 750 badminton tournament, which kicks off in Tokyo on Tuesday. The duo, who recently ended a two-year title drought by clinching the Singapore Open, are eager to continue their momentum after a brief hiatus due to injury. Satwik had to withdraw from the Indonesia Open last month following a flare-up of a recurring shoulder issue, but they are now ready to face Denmark's Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard in their opening match.

Singles Contenders and Rising Stars

In the singles category, India will rely on the talents of Lakshya Sen, P.V. Sindhu, and the promising Ayush Shetty. Lakshya, who reached the finals of the All England Championships earlier this year, will begin his tournament against Japan's Koki Watanabe. Currently ranked 14th in the world, Lakshya has had a solid season, marked by several quarterfinal finishes, although his unexpected early exit at the Indonesia Open raised eyebrows.

Ayush Shetty, a 20-year-old rising star, faces a challenging first-round match against Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the second seed and former world champion. After winning the US Open Super 300 last year and finishing as a runner-up at the Badminton Asia Championships this season, Ayush is on an upward trajectory and will look to make a significant impact.

Two-time Olympic medalist P.V. Sindhu is also in action, set to compete against Malaysia's Wong Ling Ching in the women's singles. Despite consistently reaching the later stages of tournaments this season, Sindhu is still in search of her first title since winning the Syed Modi International in 2024. Meanwhile, teenage talent Unnati Hooda will take on Huang Yu-Hsun from Chinese Taipei, hoping to convert her potential into success after earlier struggles in higher-tier events.

Men's and Mixed Doubles Challenges

In men's doubles, Hariharan Amsakarunan and M.R. Arjun, who contributed to India's bronze medal at the Thomas Cup earlier this year, will face a tough opening round against Chinese Taipei's Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan. Additionally, the mixed doubles teams of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, along with Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde, will encounter contrasting challenges. Dhruv and Tanisha will compete against Scotland's Alexander Dunn and Julie Macpherson, while Rohan and Ruthvika are set to face the formidable top seeds Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping from China.
