Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty Suffer Shock Asian Games Exit

Indian badminton suffered a significant setback at the Asian Games on Friday as the men's doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were eliminated in the opening round. The former world number one pair, who entered the tournament as defending champions, fell to Thailand's Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Peeratchai Sukphun in a contest that lasted one hour and eight minutes.

Despite a strong start that saw the Indian pair secure the opening game, the momentum shifted as the Thai challengers mounted a determined comeback. After dropping the first game 12-21, Teeraratsakul and Sukphun leveled the match by taking the second 21-19, before sealing the upset with a 21-14 victory in the deciding game.

Mixed Doubles Success and Singles Progress

While the men's doubles campaign ended prematurely, the mixed doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila provided a bright spot for the Indian contingent. The duo navigated their way into the quarterfinals after securing two consecutive victories on Friday.

Crasto and Kapila began their day with a dominant 21-8, 21-7 win against the Maldives' Nibal Ahmed and Aminath Nabeeha Abdul Razzaq, a match that concluded in just 21 minutes. They followed this with a much tighter encounter against Malaysia's Shevon Jemie Lai and Soon Huat Goh, eventually prevailing 22-20, 24-22 after an hour of play. The pair is now set to face the Chinese duo of Yan Zhe Feng and Dongping Huang in the quarterfinal stage.

In the women's singles competition, Unnati Hooda successfully moved into the second round. She registered a comfortable 21-9, 21-10 victory over North Korea's Mi Song Yu, completing the match in 30 minutes. These individual results follow a mixed performance in the team events, where the women's side finished without a medal and the men's team secured a bronze.
