Nitesh Kumar and Naveen Sivakumar Lead India's Gold Rush at Asian Para Games

India enjoyed a dominant Friday at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya, with Nitesh Kumar and Naveen Sivakumar leading a golden charge in the badminton competition. Nitesh claimed the men's singles SL3 title after a clinical performance against compatriot and fellow Paralympic gold medallist Pramod Bhagat, securing a 21-18, 21-16 victory in straight games.

Reflecting on the win, Nitesh expressed his satisfaction in overcoming his rival in two sets, noting that the victory felt particularly special given his previous near-misses in major tournaments. For Bhagat, who had secured gold in the 2018 and 2022 editions, the result marked a shift in fortunes as he settled for silver, citing issues with his judgment and stroke execution during the final.

Badminton and Archery Successes

The Indian badminton contingent continued its momentum as Naveen Sivakumar delivered a commanding display in the men's singles SL4 final. Naveen required just 36 minutes to dispatch Indonesia's Fredy Setiawan 21-9, 21-17, adding another gold medal to the national tally. In other badminton results, Thulasimathi Murugesan earned a silver medal in the women's singles SU5 category after a 18-21, 11-21 loss to China's Yang Qiuxia. Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan also secured silver in the women's singles SH6 final, falling 12-21, 13-21 to Li Fengmei of China.

Beyond the badminton courts, India found success at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square, where Harvinder Singh and Vijay Sundi clinched gold in the para recurve men's doubles archery event. After splitting the opening set 35-35 against China, the Indian pair surged ahead, winning the subsequent sets 37-36 and 38-36 to secure a 5-1 victory. Conversely, the women's para recurve doubles final saw Bhawna Choudhary and Pooja Jatyan settle for silver following a 0-6 defeat to China's Gao Zihan and Wang Xueqian.

Ongoing Campaigns

Despite her loss in the singles final, Thulasimathi Murugesan remains in contention for further accolades. She is scheduled to partner Nitesh Kumar in the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 final against Indonesia's Leani Ratri Oktila and Hikmat Ramdani. Additionally, Murugesan will team up with Manasi Girishchandra Joshi for the women's doubles SL3-SU5 final, where they face the Chinese pair of Yang Qiuxia and Xiao Zuxian.
