Sindhushree Claims Pole Vault Gold and Asiad Spot by Defeating Baranica

In a remarkable display of talent and determination, Sindhushree G. from Karnataka made headlines at the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championship held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on June 25, 2026. The 25-year-old athlete stunned the crowd by clinching the women's pole vault title, achieving a new national record of 4.25 meters, which also secured her a spot at the upcoming Asian Games.

Sindhushree's victory was particularly inspiring given her humble preparation. Training with a borrowed pole from a male athlete who mistakenly purchased it, she showcased her resilience in the face of challenging conditions. Her previous personal best was 4.00 meters, set during the Indian Athletics Series in Delhi just a month prior. "I do 30 jumps in training. I had enough endurance," she stated, reflecting on her rigorous preparation.

Emotional Dedication

Holding a photograph of her late father, R. Ganesh, who passed away in 2022, Sindhushree dedicated her achievement to him. "He always wanted me to wear the Indian jersey. I know he will watch me at the Asian Games," she expressed, highlighting the emotional significance of her win. Ganesh had been a strong supporter of her athletic career, encouraging her to pursue her dreams.

In addition to Sindhushree's triumph, the championship featured several other standout performances. Gowthami Jayaraman of Tamil Nadu surprised many by winning the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:04.17, edging out Pooja Ola. Animesh Kujur from Odisha also made waves by qualifying for the Asian Games in the men's 200 meters, first clocking 20.87 seconds in the heats and then improving to 20.74 seconds in the final.

Record-Breaking Performances

The event also saw impressive results in other categories. Harita Bhadra and Unnathi Bollanda qualified for the Asian Games in the women's 200 meters, finishing with times of 23.14 and 23.40 seconds, respectively. Tejas Shirse set a new meet record in the men's 110 meters hurdles, achieving a time of 13.43 seconds, surpassing his own previous record of 13.54 seconds.

As the championship continues, athletes are not only vying for national titles but also for the opportunity to represent India on the continental stage, making this event a pivotal moment in their athletic careers.
