Animesh Kujur Makes History as the First Indian Sprinter to Accomplish This Milestone

In a remarkable display of speed and skill, Animesh Kujur, India's national record holder in the 200m, achieved a personal best of 10.14 seconds, securing second place in the men's 100m final at the PUMA Fast Arms Fast Legs 2026 meet held on Saturday. This impressive time marks the fastest 100m ever recorded by an Indian athlete on foreign soil and positions him as the second-fastest Indian sprinter overall, trailing only Gurindervir Singh, who holds the national record at 10.09 seconds. Earlier in the day, Kujur had already demonstrated his prowess by winning his heat with a time of 10.19 seconds, further showcasing his consistent improvement throughout the season.

As the current national record holder in the 200m, Animesh Kujur has firmly established himself among the elite sprinters in India, now holding three of the five fastest 100m times recorded by an Indian. The all-time rankings are as follows: Gurindervir Singh (10.09s), Animesh Kujur (10.14s), Animesh Kujur (10.15s), Gurindervir Singh (10.17s), and Animesh Kujur (10.18s). His recent success in the 100m comes on the heels of his qualification for the Asian Games in the 200m event, which he achieved at the Inter-State National Athletics Championships in June, clocking a time of 20.74 seconds—well under the Athletics Federation of India's qualifying standard of 20.88 seconds.

Despite his impressive performance, Animesh expressed a desire for improvement, stating that his primary focus was securing qualification rather than achieving a specific time. "Honestly, I was not here for timing. The idea was to secure the qualification mark for the Asian Games. Since I have got it now, I will focus on improving before the Asian Games," he remarked following the race. His personal best in the 200m remains the national record of 20.32 seconds. Animesh's recent achievements come after India's bronze medal finish in the mixed 4x100m relay at the Asian Relay Championships, where he played a crucial role. His coach, Martin Owens, noted that the emphasis had been on qualification rather than speed due to a demanding travel schedule. While Animesh has often stated that the 200m is his preferred event, his significant strides in the 100m over the past year highlight his evolving status as one of India's premier sprinting talents as he prepares for the upcoming Asian Games.
