Kalinga Prepares for National Inter-State Athletics as Indian Athletes Make Final Push for Asiad Qualification

As the 65th National inter-State senior athletics championship approaches, excitement is building among elite athletes in India. The event, set to commence on Wednesday at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, serves as a crucial selection opportunity for athletes aiming to qualify for the upcoming Asian Games. Despite recent shipping challenges in the Strait of Hormuz due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, the newly laid track at the stadium is ready for competition, having been completed at a cost of approximately ₹22 crore.

Gulveer Singh, the national record holder in the 5000 meters, expressed his anticipation for the new track, stating, “I’ll have an idea about the track when I compete tomorrow [Wednesday] morning.” His sentiments were echoed by high jumper Sarvesh Kushare, who recently matched his personal best of 2.28 meters at a previous meet in Ranchi. “I have competed in these conditions before. I will give my best here,” Kushare remarked, highlighting the competitive spirit among the athletes.

Elite Athletes Set Their Sights on Records

Among the competitors is sprinter Animesh Kujur, who arrived in Bhubaneswar after contributing to India’s gold medal victory in the 4x100 meter relay at the Asian Relays in China. Kujur aims to reclaim his national record in the 100 meters, stating, “I hope to get back my (100m National) record.” He will also participate in the 200 meters, showcasing his versatility on the track.

Joint national record holders in pole vault, Dev Meena and Kuldeep Kumar, are also looking to replicate their impressive mark of 5.45 meters from the Ranchi meet to secure their spots for the Asian Games. Other notable athletes include quartermiler Vishal T.K. and high jumper Pooja, both of whom hold national records and are expected to deliver strong performances. Additionally, hurdler Jyothi Yarraji is making her return after a year-long injury layoff, adding to the event's intrigue.

Notable Absences and Expectations

While many top athletes will be competing, some prominent figures, including former World and Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, 100m national record holder Gurindervir Singh, and decathlete Tejaswin Shankar, have received exemptions from this meet. Their absence raises questions about the competition dynamics, but the remaining athletes are eager to seize this opportunity to showcase their talents and secure their places in the national team for the Asian Games.
