Gulveer Singh Secures 10,000m Silver at Asian Games

Gulveer Singh added another significant achievement to his career by securing the silver medal in the men's 10,000m event at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Friday. The Indian long-distance runner crossed the finish line in 28:29.38, finishing just behind Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew, who claimed the gold medal with a time of 28:27.51.

This latest podium finish marks a progression for Singh, who previously earned a bronze medal in the same event at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games. Throughout the race, he maintained a disciplined approach, remaining within the lead pack for the duration of the contest before executing his final move in the closing stages to secure second place.

A Strategic Approach to Championship Racing

Reflecting on his performance, Singh noted that his success was the result of a carefully executed race plan rather than a focus on achieving a specific time. He emphasized the distinct nature of championship-style racing, where tactical positioning often outweighs raw speed. By staying patient and relaxed, he was able to stay in contention until the final moments of the race.

"It feels good to win a silver medal for India at the Asian Games. Standing on the podium at a championship like this is satisfying," Singh said. "We had prepared for a championship race rather than focusing on timing, and I was able to stick to the race plan. This medal is encouraging, but I know there is still a long way to go and many more races ahead."

Focusing on Continuous Improvement

Singh attributed his ongoing development to the support structure provided by the Athletics Federation of India and the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS). He highlighted that his primary objective remains incremental progress, believing that consistent preparation naturally leads to positive results on the track.

The athlete stressed the importance of attention to detail, noting that at the elite level, success is often determined by marginal gains. He credited his support team—including coaches, physiotherapists, and strength and conditioning experts—for allowing him to dedicate his full focus to training and recovery. Looking ahead, Singh intends to maintain his current training regimen, aiming to refine the small details that he believes make the biggest difference in high-stakes competition.
