As the Glasgow Commonwealth Games approach, the Indian contingent is gearing up for a robust performance, despite the event being scaled down by organizers. Scheduled from July 23 to August 2, the Games will feature 10 disciplines for able-bodied athletes and six for para-athletes, all taking place within an eight-mile radius to minimize costs. Approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 nations are expected to participate, with India sending a delegation of 126 competitors.
Training Camps Across Europe
The Indian athletes are currently engaged in various training camps across Europe in preparation for the Games. The athletics team, which constitutes the largest segment of the contingent with 32 members, will soon depart for the Spala Olympic Training Centre in Poland. This group includes prominent athletes such as javelin thrower
Meanwhile, the boxing team, consisting of 14 members, is scheduled to travel to Belfast, Ireland, on July 10 for their training camp, before heading to Glasgow on July 21. In addition, butterfly swimmer Sajan Prakash is already in Edinburgh for a three-week training session, while the rest of the swimming team will depart on July 16 for training in either Scotland or England.
Preparation for Para-Athletes
The weightlifting team has been training at the Warley Weightlifting Club in Birmingham since June 28 and will remain there until July 22. Similarly, six cyclists are currently training in France and will continue their preparations until July 26. The judo team, comprising 14 athletes, is training at Tsukuba University in Japan and will conclude their camp on July 17.
In the realm of gymnastics, the eight-member team, which includes four men and four women, has already begun their training at the South Essex Gymnastics Club in England. They will enter the Games Village on July 20. The lawn bowls team, consisting of six members, has transitioned from their training at Delhi Public School RK Puram to Glasgow for final preparations.
For para-athletes, preparations are also in full swing. A training camp for athletics is being held at the Sports Authority of India's National Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, running until July 22. Para-swimmers are splitting their training between facilities in Gandhinagar and Delhi, while the 3x3 wheelchair basketball team is based at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Training Centre for Disability Sports in Gwalior.
