Ancy breaks Anju's long-standing national record at the inter-State athletics championship.

In a remarkable display of athletic prowess, Ancy Sojan shattered a long-standing national record in the long jump at the National inter-State athletics meet held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Saturday. Sojan's leap of 6.88 meters not only surpassed the previous record set by Anju Bobby George at the 2004 Athens Olympics but also marked a significant milestone in her career as she qualified for the upcoming Asian Games.

Sojan's journey to this achievement began with a solid first jump of 6.73 meters, which set the tone for her performance. As the competition progressed, she demonstrated remarkable consistency, ultimately surpassing George's record of 6.83 meters on her fifth attempt. The moment the new record was confirmed, Sojan expressed her joy and aspirations, stating, “I hope Anju ma’am will be proud of me. I want to repeat my performance to win the Asian Games gold and qualify for the World championships.” This achievement follows her previous jump of 6.75 meters at the Federation meet in Ranchi last month.

Sarvesh Kushare Sets New High Jump Record

In another highlight of the meet, high jumper Sarvesh Kushare also made headlines by breaking an eight-year-old national record. Kushare cleared a height of 2.31 meters, surpassing Tejaswin Shankar's previous record of 2.29 meters. After struggling with his initial attempts, Kushare found his rhythm and successfully cleared the height on his third try, making him the first Indian to jump over 2.30 meters. Reflecting on his performance, he remarked, “Today, my body moved well and everything was in sync. Since I could not reach 2.30 in Ranchi, I tried 2.31 this time.”

The meet also witnessed other impressive performances, including Yoonus Shah, who clocked 3:37.55 in the men's 1500 meters, breaking a 31-year-old record previously held by Bahadur Prasad. In the men's 400-meter hurdles, Yashas P. secured victory in a photo finish with a time of 49.14 seconds. The event showcased a series of remarkable athletic feats, setting the stage for the upcoming Asian Games and highlighting the growing talent in Indian athletics.
