Earlier this year, Djokovic had a notable victory over Sinner during the Australian Open, where he ultimately fell to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Many had anticipated that Wimbledon would present his best chance to add another major title to his illustrious career. Reflecting on his aspirations, Djokovic stated, “I would like to [return to Wimbledon], at least one more time. Let’s see.”
Consistent Performance Amid High Expectations
Despite not clinching another Grand Slam title, Djokovic's performance this season has been commendable. He reached the semi-finals in all four major tournaments in 2025 and has already secured a final and a semi-final appearance this season, ahead of the upcoming US Open. “For 99 percent of the players, that would be a very good [set of] Grand Slam results,” he remarked. “For me, it’s good but not good enough, because I’m blessed and cursed to be used to something of the highest degree in terms of results and achievements.”
Djokovic acknowledged that managing expectations has become increasingly challenging as he progresses in his career. “I’m telling myself, look, this is amazing that you’re still able to… play at such a high level and push the youngsters to the limit for Grand Slam titles… But at the same time, I always have the highest expectations for myself,” he added.
Resilience in Defeat
The path to the semi-finals was fraught with challenges for Djokovic. He triumphed over notable opponents including Stefanos Tsitsipas and Arthur Rinderknech, and he survived a gripping five-set quarter-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime before meeting Sinner. “I’m proud of what I achieved three nights ago,” Djokovic reflected. “I have proven to myself and others that I can still play at the highest level.”
While he conceded that Sinner outperformed him on the day, Djokovic found solace in the positives from the tournament. “Losing in straight sets against the best player in the world, okay. It is what it is. It’s the reality you have to accept. But the tournament was positive in terms of the attitude on the court, the fighting spirit, the dedication,” he concluded.
