Tennessee Titans Trade Jeffery Simmons to Chicago Bears in Blockbuster Deal

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the NFL, the Tennessee Titans have traded star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons to the Chicago Bears. The blockbuster deal, which was finalized on Thursday, sees the Titans acquire a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 first-round pick, and a 2027 fourth-round pick in exchange for the veteran cornerstone.

The decision to part ways with Simmons came as a surprise to many, including the player himself. Only 24 hours prior to the trade, the 29-year-old had expressed his desire to remain in Nashville and help the organization navigate its current struggles. Titans right tackle JC Latham noted the visible disappointment within the locker room following the announcement, highlighting the impact Simmons had on his teammates.

A Deal Too Significant to Refuse

Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi admitted that while he had received numerous inquiries regarding Simmons since taking the job in 2024, he had no intention of trading the All-Pro defensive tackle. That stance shifted abruptly when he received a call from his former colleague, Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles. The compensation offered—two first-round picks—represented a return that had not been seen for a defensive tackle in the common draft era since 1967.

Borgonzi and head coach Robert Saleh spent Wednesday night deliberating the offer before ultimately securing approval from controlling owner Amy Adams-Strunk. Despite Simmons being a central figure in the team's long-term plans, the organization concluded that the draft capital provided a necessary opportunity to accelerate their rebuilding efforts. The Titans currently hold a 1-6 record, and the front office is looking toward the future to lift the team from its recent struggles.

Adjusting to Life Without a Defensive Anchor

The departure of Simmons leaves a massive void in the Titans' defense. Through the first seven games of the season, he led the team with four sacks, six tackles for a loss, and four passes defended. His presence was a focal point for opposing offenses, as evidenced by his 101 double-team assignments—the second-highest total among all defensive tackles in the league. These double teams frequently created favorable one-on-one opportunities for the rest of the Titans' defensive line.

Coach Saleh has now challenged the remaining members of the defensive unit to step up and seize the increased playing time. While acknowledging the difficulty of losing a leader, the team is shifting its focus to Sunday’s upcoming matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers, who joined the Titans to play alongside Simmons, emphasized the professional reality of the situation, stating that the team must continue to perform despite the roster change. As the Titans prepare for the remainder of the season, the focus remains on developing the current roster and utilizing the newly acquired assets to build a more competitive foundation for the future.
