NFL Denies Appeal: 49ers Linebacker Dre Greenlaw to Serve One-Game Suspension

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw is set to serve a one-game suspension after the NFL rejected his appeal on Tuesday. The league confirmed the decision, meaning the defensive player will be unavailable for the team's upcoming Monday night clash against the Washington Commanders.

The disciplinary action stems from an incident during Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. With 6:30 remaining in the first half, Greenlaw delivered a late hit on Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold while the player was out of bounds. The situation escalated into a physical altercation involving Seattle linebacker Ernest Jones IV, during which Greenlaw head-butted Jones, who was not wearing a helmet at the time.

League Ruling and Disciplinary History

In its official statement, the NFL cited a violation of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which governs conduct contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship. As a result of the suspension, Greenlaw will be docked pay for the missed contest.

This ruling marks the second time in two seasons that Greenlaw has faced a one-game suspension. During his previous tenure with the Denver Broncos, he was suspended for unsportsmanlike conduct after approaching referee Brad Allen and allegedly issuing a verbal threat.

The ejection on Sunday represents the third time in Greenlaw's professional career that he has been disqualified from a game. His previous ejections include a 2022 incident involving a late hit on Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, as well as a sideline altercation during a 2023 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.
