Patriots Owner Robert Kraft to Miss Rob Gronkowski's Hall of Fame Induction Following Back Surgery

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft is currently on the mend following back surgery, an operation that will prevent him from attending the upcoming Patriots Hall of Fame induction ceremony for legendary tight end Rob Gronkowski. The 85-year-old owner confirmed on Thursday that medical advice has forced him to the sidelines, humorously noting that he is effectively on his own version of injured reserve.

Beyond missing Saturday's induction event, Kraft will be absent from the team's sideline for Sunday's home matchup against the Green Bay Packers. His recovery period will also keep him from traveling with the team to Munich for their subsequent international fixture against the Detroit Lions. Kraft expressed his disappointment regarding the timing, stating that while he endured significant physical pain prior to the procedure, the prospect of missing the celebration for one of the franchise's most iconic players is particularly difficult.

Reflecting on a Decorated Career

The relationship between the owner and the former tight end remains strong, with Kraft sharing a lighthearted anecdote about Gronkowski’s own history with back issues. Having witnessed the physical toll the game took on the four-time All-Pro, Kraft joked that he has reconsidered his previous desire to experience life as the charismatic star. Gronkowski, who was voted into the Patriots Hall of Fame by fans during his first year of eligibility, played nine seasons in New England, securing three Super Bowl titles during his tenure.

The induction ceremony was carefully coordinated with Fox to accommodate Gronkowski’s current broadcasting commitments. The tight end will be honored at the Hall of Fame event on Saturday and will receive further recognition during halftime of Sunday’s game. Kraft took the opportunity to reflect on Gronkowski’s legacy, recalling the 2010 draft day celebration as a defining moment of their partnership. He highlighted the player's immediate impact on the fanbase and his consistent performance as the league's standard-bearer at the tight end position for nearly a decade.

Gronkowski’s statistical contributions to the franchise were immense, including 521 regular-season receptions for 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns. His postseason record was equally impressive, with 81 catches for 1,163 yards and 12 scores across his playoff appearances. Kraft specifically pointed to a memorable one-handed catch against the Denver Broncos in 2014 as a highlight of his career. As the Patriots navigate a season marked by significant injury challenges to the active roster, the organization prepares to celebrate a player whose energy and community contributions, including the 2016 Ron Burton Community Service Award, left a lasting mark on the region.
