Despite an undefeated 4-0 start, the Kansas City Chiefs are seeking to end a month-long sack drought as they prepare to face a depleted Los Angeles Chargers offensive line this Sunday.

Kansas City Chiefs Aim to Revive Pass Rush Against Struggling Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs returned to their training facility this week following a bye, shifting their focus toward Sunday’s upcoming clash with the Los Angeles Chargers. While the team remains undefeated at 4-0, the defensive unit is facing a specific challenge: they have failed to record a single sack over the past month. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has emphasized accountability within the group, noting that his players are receptive to constructive criticism regarding their recent performance.

The upcoming matchup against the Chargers presents a potential opportunity for the Chiefs to break their sack drought. The Los Angeles offensive line has struggled significantly with injuries, missing key starters including right tackle Joe Alt, left tackle Rashawn Slater, left guard Kayode Awosika, and backup guard Trevor Penning. Consequently, quarterback Justin Herbert has been sacked at least twice in every game this season, including five times during last week’s loss to the Denver Broncos.

Addressing the Pressure Deficit

Entering the week, the Chiefs ranked 27th in pass rush win rate, successfully beating pass protection within 2.5 seconds only 45% of the time. Head coach Andy Reid acknowledged the importance of sacks but maintained that the team has been effective in generating general pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Despite this, the lack of finishing plays has been a point of frustration for the defensive front, which has recorded only three sacks through four games, tying them for the fewest in the league.

In their recent victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chiefs pressured quarterback Kirk Cousins on just 34.6% of his dropbacks. Defensive end Chris Jones noted that costly penalties, such as a holding call on nickel cornerback L'Jarius Sneed that nullified a late-game sack, have hindered the defense's ability to close out plays. Defensive end George Karlaftis, who leads the team with 10 quarterback hits despite having no sacks, expressed that the group is focused on correcting missed opportunities and improving their impact on the game.

Strategic Adjustments and Future Outlook

Opponents have frequently utilized double teams against Chris Jones and employed play-action passes on early downs to neutralize the Chiefs' pass rush. Spagnuolo is looking for better execution on first and second downs to create more favorable rushing situations on third down. The team is also banking on the continued development of rookies R Mason Thomas and Peter Woods, who were brought in to provide support to the veteran pass-rushing core.

Looking ahead, the Chiefs expect reinforcements as the season progresses, including the eventual return of defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott from a knee injury. For now, the focus remains on execution. Chris Jones remains confident in the team's process, emphasizing that the primary goal is winning games while trusting that the sack totals will eventually align with the pressure they are generating on the field.
