Green Bay Packers Retain Josh Jacobs Amid New Abuse Allegations

The Green Bay Packers have confirmed their intention to keep running back Josh Jacobs on the roster despite the emergence of new allegations involving physical and verbal abuse. These claims, brought forward by multiple women, predate the incident in May that led to the player's recent arrest.

Head coach Matt LaFleur addressed the situation on Monday, stating that the organization plans to move forward with the running back while the league conducts its own investigation. LaFleur noted that the team only became aware of these additional allegations following the release of police records last week, which detailed reports from three women made after Jacobs' initial arrest earlier this year.

Legal Context and Team Stance

The recent developments follow a May 23 incident at Jacobs' residence near Green Bay, which resulted in his arrest. In September, the player entered a plea of no contest to two misdemeanor charges. He was subsequently convicted of battery, issued a $1,000 fine, and entered into a deferred judgment agreement regarding a charge of property damage.

Legal representatives for Jacobs issued a statement on Sunday, dismissing the newly surfaced claims as unsupported and stale. Meanwhile, the Packers have maintained their support for the player throughout the legal proceedings. Jacobs was previously placed on the NFL's commissioner exempt list, missing six games before being cleared to return to the field in Week 7. The league's investigation into the matter remains ongoing, and any potential future suspension may account for the time he already spent on the exempt list.

Performance and On-Field Conduct

Beyond the legal developments, LaFleur also addressed a recent incident involving the player's on-field conduct. During a Thursday night game against the Carolina Panthers, Jacobs performed a touchdown celebration that involved placing his hands behind his back. While some speculated the gesture was related to his legal situation, the running back explained it was a reference to the gospel song Break Every Chain.

LaFleur confirmed he held a private conversation with Jacobs regarding the celebration after reviewing the game footage. On the field, the Packers are currently navigating the league's lowest-ranked rushing offense. Since his return to the lineup, Jacobs has recorded 32 carries for 75 yards and one rushing touchdown, alongside 11 receptions for 68 yards and two receiving touchdowns across two appearances.
