Chicago Bears keep quarterback decision under wraps for Jets clash

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson is maintaining a veil of secrecy regarding his starting quarterback for Sunday’s matchup against the New York Jets. With Caleb Williams sidelined for a second consecutive week due to a Grade 2 hamstring strain, the coaching staff is weighing their options between Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent.

Addressing the media on Friday, just two days before the Week 4 kickoff, Johnson declined to provide clarity on who would lead the offense. When pressed on the decision, the coach simply stated, "We'll find out on Sunday." Both signal-callers participated in full team repetitions throughout the week, leaving the final selection uncertain until game day.

Evaluating the quarterback options

The uncertainty follows a dominant performance by Keenum in last Monday’s 27-7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. In his first start in 1,009 days, the veteran delivered an efficient display, throwing for 247 yards and three touchdowns without committing a turnover or taking a sack. Johnson acknowledged that the team’s tendency to ride the "hot hand" would be a significant factor in the final evaluation.

Bagent, meanwhile, remains a viable alternative. Having recently cleared concussion protocol, he served as the backup during the win against Philadelphia. Johnson noted that Bagent was designated as the team’s No. 2 quarterback at the conclusion of training camp for a specific reason, underscoring the coaching staff's confidence in his abilities. Should Bagent receive the starting nod, it would mark his first appearance in the starting lineup since Week 10 of the 2023 season, when he guided the Bears to a 16-13 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

Despite the ambiguity, Johnson expressed full confidence in his roster's preparation. "I know both of them are well prepared to play and win a game for us," he said. The Bears now look to build on their recent momentum as they prepare to face the Jets, with the final decision on the starting quarterback set to be revealed at kickoff.
