Carolina Panthers Struggle Against Texans in Joint Training Camp Practice

The Carolina Panthers endured a challenging Wednesday during their joint practice session with the Houston Texans in Charlotte, as the visiting defense dominated the proceedings. Head coach Dave Canales acknowledged the disparity in performance, noting that the Texans' defensive unit consistently overwhelmed the Panthers' offensive line throughout the workout.

The Texans' pass rush proved particularly disruptive, with five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Danielle Hunter frequently penetrating the backfield. Hunter recorded at least five would-be sacks against quarterback Bryce Young, while Will Anderson Jr. also applied consistent pressure. The defensive dominance resulted in two interceptions for Texans defensive back Calen Bullock, who capitalized on a deep ball and a ricochet off wide receiver Jalen Coker’s hands.

Offensive Challenges and Injury Updates

Canales emphasized that the joint practice provided essential feedback for the coaching staff, despite the lopsided results. While the offensive line, featuring left tackle Rasheed Walker and rookie right tackle Monroe Freeling, struggled to contain the Houston pass rush, Canales remained optimistic about the team's overall scheme and the development of his receiving corps. He specifically highlighted the potential of Young’s growing chemistry with wide receivers Jalen Coker and Tetairoa McMillan.

The team is currently managing several injury concerns as they approach the final roster cut-down. Running back Chuba Hubbard is sidelined with a hamstring injury, while wide receiver Xavier Legette is expected to miss the remainder of the preseason due to a foot issue. Additionally, rookie quarterback Haynes King remains out with a hamstring injury. Canales confirmed that the starters, who took roughly 75% of the reps during the joint session, will not participate in the upcoming preseason finale against the Texans.

Looking Toward the Regular Season

As the Panthers prepare to trim their roster from 91 players to 53 by Sunday, the coaching staff continues to evaluate depth across all positions. The team is navigating a series of injuries to key contributors, including starting tackles Ikem Ekwonu and Taylor Moton, and is relying on versatile players like Brady Christensen to provide necessary insurance on the offensive line.

Following a 2025 campaign that saw the Panthers secure an NFC South title with an 8-9 record, the team is focused on building consistency. With the preseason concluding, the organization is shifting its attention to regular-season preparations, aiming to improve upon their recent performance and maintain their status as contenders in a competitive division.
