Atlanta Falcons face quarterback uncertainty ahead of Panthers clash

The Atlanta Falcons are heading into their upcoming matchup against the Carolina Panthers with significant uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position. Head coach Kevin Stefanski addressed the media on Wednesday, confirming that the team has yet to settle on a starter for Sunday’s contest, though he emphasized that he is not ruling any of his available options out at this stage.

The situation remains fluid as the coaching staff monitors the health of their roster. Cooper Rush, who started in last week's 20-13 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers, is currently managing back spasms that flared up on Saturday. While Rush is receiving ongoing treatment, Stefanski noted that he is expected to be a full participant in Wednesday's practice session.

Beyond the primary concerns with Tagovailoa and Rush, the team is also considering other possibilities. Michael Penix Jr. has been fully cleared for practice as he continues his recovery from left ACL surgery, though he has not yet indicated he is prepared for live game action. Additionally, undrafted rookie Jack Strand, who impressed during the preseason, remains in the conversation. Despite limited practice repetitions since the conclusion of training camp, Stefanski confirmed that Strand is also being considered for the starting assignment.

Reflecting on the challenges of the current situation, Stefanski acknowledged the difficulty of not having a clear starter early in the week. He noted that while every team prefers to have stability at every position, the current priority is to maintain flexibility and provide every player with the opportunity to demonstrate their readiness to compete. The Falcons will continue to assess their options throughout the week as they prepare for the Panthers.
