Despite the early setback, the 28-year-old maintained his composure to mount a methodical recovery. As the race progressed, KTM’s Pedro Acosta established a commanding lead of nearly three seconds, appearing set for a home-circuit victory. However, Acosta crashed out with three laps remaining, opening the door for Martin to capitalize and secure his 20th career sprint win.
A Shift in the Championship Standings
The result marks a significant swing in the title race, with Martin now sitting on 286 points. He holds a three-point advantage over Marquez heading into Sunday’s main Grand Prix. Reflecting on his comeback, Martin admitted he initially feared his chances had vanished after the first-lap incident. He credited his team for their support and emphasized his focus on maintaining his current pace for the remainder of the weekend.
Marquez, who had briefly taken the championship lead following his victory at the San Marino Grand Prix last weekend, finished the sprint in second place. The seven-time champion noted that his primary goal had been to minimize the points gap to Martin, acknowledging that his rival and the ill-fated Acosta had shown superior pace throughout the practice sessions.
The podium was rounded out by Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi, who secured third place. Behind the leaders, Ai Ogura finished in fourth, followed by Alex Marquez in fifth. With only three points separating the top two contenders, Sunday's race in Spielberg is set to be a pivotal encounter in the 2026 season.
