Harry Kane Makes History as First English Winner of Germany's Footballer of the Year

Harry Kane has etched his name into the history books of German football, becoming the first English player to be named Germany's Footballer of the Year. The Bayern Munich striker received the accolade following an exceptional 2025-26 campaign, during which he established himself as the premier attacking force in the Bundesliga.

The award was presented to the England captain at the Allianz Arena shortly before Bayern Munich’s opening match of the new Bundesliga season. The recognition marks a significant milestone in Kane’s career, adding to his growing list of individual honours since his move to Germany.

A Dominant Campaign Recognized by Journalists

The voting, conducted by members of the Association of German Sports Journalists (VDS), saw Kane emerge as the clear winner. He secured 272 of the 659 total votes cast, comfortably finishing ahead of his Bayern Munich teammate Michael Olise, who received 203 votes. Kane succeeds Florian Wirtz, who was the recipient of the award in 2025.

Expressing his gratitude on social media, Kane described the achievement as a special honour. He noted the significance of collecting the trophy at the Allianz Arena in front of the club's supporters. The ceremony also celebrated other key figures within the Bayern setup, with head coach Vincent Kompany named Coach of the Year, while Giulia Gwinn was honoured with the women's Footballer of the Year award.

A Week of Accolades for the Striker

This recognition caps a remarkable week for the forward, who has been in prolific form. Earlier in the week, Kane was officially awarded the European Golden Shoe, acknowledging his status as the continent's leading goalscorer for the 2025-26 season. His tally included an impressive 36 goals in the Bundesliga alone.

The individual awards follow recent team success, as Kane helped Bayern Munich secure the 2026 Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. Bayern claimed the trophy after a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund, though the striker was kept off the scoresheet in that particular encounter. As the new season begins, Kane’s latest award serves as a testament to his impact on the German game since his arrival.
