East Bengal Players Boycott Training Over Unpaid Salaries Ahead of ISL Opener

East Bengal’s preparations for the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) season have hit a significant hurdle after the first-team squad boycotted a scheduled training session on Wednesday. The players, including Mohammed Rashid, Anwar Ali, and Edmund Lalrindika, arrived at the Centre of Excellence in Rajarhat but opted not to take the field, choosing instead to hold a private meeting before departing the facility.

The protest stems from mounting frustration over unpaid salaries, a situation that has intensified following the departure of the club's investor, Emami. While the players have previously continued to fulfill their match commitments despite delays in payment, the decision to skip training marks a notable escalation in the ongoing financial uncertainty surrounding the club.

Financial Instability Clouds ISL Campaign

The timing of the boycott is particularly concerning for head coach Antonio Habas, as the team is scheduled to face Churchill Brothers in their ISL opener on Sunday, October 18. With the squad set to depart for Goa this Friday, the interruption leaves the coaching staff with minimal time to conduct final preparations. Habas now faces the challenge of regrouping his side with only two days of training remaining at their home base.

Club officials have reportedly acknowledged the severity of the situation and are working to resolve the payment issues immediately. There are indications that a portion of the outstanding dues could be settled by Thursday. Despite the current impasse, the club management remains hopeful that a new investor will be secured within the next 48 hours to stabilize the financial situation.

The disruption comes at a time when the team had been showing resilience on the pitch, having recently secured a Durand Cup victory and delivered a competitive performance against Al Shorta in the AFC Champions League Two. As the defending ISL champions, the club is under pressure to resolve the internal crisis quickly to ensure the squad is focused on their opening fixture.
