Cristiano Ronaldo Demands Lifetime Stadium Bans Following Abuse Directed at Ruben Neves

Cristiano Ronaldo has publicly demanded that football authorities implement lifetime stadium bans for supporters who engage in abusive behavior. The Al-Nassr forward’s call to action follows a distressing incident during Saturday’s Saudi Pro League match, where Al-Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves was subjected to offensive chants referencing the late Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota.

Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, last July, shared a close personal and professional bond with Neves. The two players were teammates for Portugal and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Neves served as a pallbearer at Jota's funeral. The chants occurred while Neves was preparing to take a free-kick alongside teammate Crysencio Summerville at Al-Taawoun’s home stadium.

Ronaldo Calls for League Intervention

Footage of the incident, which has circulated widely on social media, shows Neves responding to the taunts with sarcastic applause and a thumbs-up. He was also seen pointing toward the sky and gesturing toward the section of the crowd from which the chants originated. Following the conclusion of the match, Neves expressed his frustration, stating, "I just hope they don't go to pray later after what they did."

Ronaldo, who played alongside both men for the Portuguese national team, took to social media to condemn the actions of the supporters. In a comment on an Instagram post featuring the footage, the veteran striker insisted that the league must intervene to curb such conduct. He emphasized that the behavior crossed a line, stating that individuals responsible for such abuse should be permanently barred from attending matches in the future.

Match Context and Background

The incident took place during a dominant performance by Al-Hilal, who secured a 6-0 victory over Al-Taawoun to maintain their position at the top of the Saudi Pro League table. The match featured a hat-trick from Gabriel Martinelli and a brace from England international Ollie Watkins.

The relationship between Neves and Jota remains a significant point of context, as Neves inherited Jota's No. 21 shirt for the Portuguese national team following his passing. As of now, the call for disciplinary action from one of the sport's most prominent figures highlights growing concerns regarding fan conduct within the league.
