VVS Laxman to Lead India Men’s Cricket Team at 2026 Asian Games

VVS Laxman, the Director of Cricket at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, has been appointed to lead the Indian men’s cricket team as head coach for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The former Test batter will step into the role to oversee the squad’s title defense, as current head coach Gautam Gambhir is set to remain with the senior national side for their home ODI series against the West Indies, which commences on September 27.

Laxman brings significant experience to the position, having previously guided the Indian men’s team to a gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. For the 2026 campaign, he will be supported by a coaching staff featuring former India spinner Sunil Joshi, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, and Subhadeep Ghosh, as confirmed by the official list released by the Sports Ministry.

Defending Titles in Aichi-Nagoya

The cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games is scheduled to begin on September 24. The Indian men’s team, captained by Shreyas Iyer, will enter the tournament as defending champions and are slated to play their opening match on September 28. Their first opponent will be the runner-up from Group A, a pool that includes Afghanistan, Japan, and Nepal. The squad features a mix of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, including teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Simultaneously, the Indian women’s team will also look to retain their gold medal. Led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, the women’s side is scheduled to enter the tournament directly at the quarterfinal stage, where they will face the host nation, Japan. Amol Muzumdar will continue his tenure as the women’s head coach, supported by bowling coach Aavishkar Salvi and fielding coach Munish Bali.

Squad Selections for the Tournament

The BCCI has confirmed the rosters for both squads as they prepare for the continental event. The men’s squad includes Shreyas Iyer, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

The women’s squad features Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Pratika Rawal, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, Gunalan Kamalini, Bharti Fulmali, Sree Charani, Renuka Thakur, Kranti Gaud, Arundhati Reddy, Shreyanka Patil, Radha Yadav, and Nandani Sharma.
