Former India captain
Ganguly’s appointment represents a return to a familiar environment, as he has maintained a long-standing association with the Delhi-based outfit since 2019. During his previous tenure, he served in various capacities, including as an advisor and as the Director of Cricket for both the franchise's men's and women's teams. Most recently, the 54-year-old gained experience in the dugout as the head coach of the Pretoria Capitals, the team's affiliate in the SA20 league.
A New Chapter for Delhi Capitals
Reflecting on his new appointment, Ganguly expressed his deep connection to the organization. In a statement released by the franchise, he noted that his history with the management, support staff, and players would be instrumental in his transition to the head coaching role. He emphasized his commitment to fostering a competitive environment, stating his intention to build a squad that plays a strong and fearless brand of cricket.
The leadership transition comes at a pivotal time for the franchise, which is jointly owned by the GMR Group and the JSW Group. Under the current management structure, the two groups rotate operational control every two years, with the JSW Group taking the lead following the conclusion of GMR's tenure in 2026.
Management Backs Visionary Leadership
Parth Jindal, the Chairman of Delhi Capitals and founder of JSW Sports, formally welcomed the former Indian skipper to the role. Jindal praised Ganguly’s extensive background as both a player and an administrator, expressing confidence that his leadership would provide the necessary direction for the team to compete for the IPL title.
Jindal highlighted that Ganguly has long been an integral member of the Delhi Capitals family, and the decision to elevate him to the head coaching position is viewed as a strategic step toward revitalizing the team's performance on the field. As the franchise prepares for the 2027 season, the focus remains on leveraging Ganguly's experience to turn around the team's recent fortunes and establish a consistent presence in the tournament's latter stages.
