Manav Suthar surpasses Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav with 74% successful big-turn deliveries in Galle.

In a standout performance during the opening Test against Sri Lanka, Indian left-arm spinner Manav Suthar showcased his potential by taking four wickets in the first innings. The 24-year-old's impressive figures of 4 for 76 contributed significantly to India's dominance, as they bowled Sri Lanka out for 284 after posting a formidable 462 in their own innings at the Galle International Stadium.

Impressive Spin Performance

Suthar's ability to apply pressure on the Sri Lankan batsmen was evident throughout the match. Notably, he achieved a remarkable 74% of his deliveries turning more than 4.5 degrees, the highest among all spinners in the game. In comparison, Keshara Nuwantha followed with 60.4%, while Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav recorded 58.2% and 50%, respectively. Other spinners, including Sonal Dinusha and Prabath Jayasuriya, had lower percentages, indicating Suthar's exceptional skill in exploiting the conditions.

Preparation and Strategy

Prior to the series, Suthar benefited from a 10-day training program at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, where he practiced with Kookaburra balls in conditions similar to those he would face in Galle. This preparation was crucial, as he aimed to master the right length and line to maximize the bounce offered by the pitch. In a post-match press conference, Suthar emphasized the importance of consistency in his bowling strategy, stating, “Our main focus was to get wickets in the first session. We didn't get wickets in the second session but we got results in the third session.”

Sharing the bowling attack with seasoned spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who reached the milestone of 350 Test wickets during the innings, Suthar expressed his eagerness to learn from Jadeja's experience. He noted, “There are a lot of things that I can learn from him. His consistency while bowling at stumps is world class.” Suthar also observed the Sri Lankan spinners' techniques, recognizing the importance of pace variation and consistency on the wicket.

In a remarkable start to the match, Suthar claimed the wicket of veteran batsman Dinesh Chandimal with his very first delivery, a feat that bolstered his confidence as he settled into the game. Reflecting on this achievement, he remarked, “It's a very good feeling to get a wicket on the first ball. It gives you lots of confidence throughout the game.”
