Kamran Akmal Criticises Saim Ayub Over Controversial Send-off in Asian Games Final

India successfully defended their Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal on Saturday, overcoming a spirited Pakistan side in a high-stakes final. While the eventual 19-run victory highlighted India's composure under pressure, the match was marred by a controversial celebration from Pakistan all-rounder Saim Ayub directed at teenage Indian batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

The incident occurred after Ayub dismissed the 15-year-old Sooryavanshi, who had contributed 15 runs from nine deliveries. Following the dismissal, Ayub performed a 'baby cradle' gesture toward the young batter. Sooryavanshi, who had begun his innings with aggressive intent—including two sixes off Saad Masood in the second over—offered no reaction before walking back to the dugout.

Akmal Calls Out Social Media Focus

The celebration drew sharp criticism from former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal during an appearance on the YouTube show 'Game Plan'. Addressing the incident, Akmal expressed his disapproval of the gesture, suggesting that such actions detract from the professionalism required at the international level.

Akmal remarked that the focus on social media optics is a recurring issue that the team management needs to address. He emphasised that regardless of the age of the opponent, the focus should remain on performance rather than theatrics. Akmal stated that Ayub, who is an established player, should prioritise his contributions on the field rather than engaging in gestures that do not reflect well on the team.

India Secures Gold in Competitive Final

The match itself proved to be a tightly contested affair. India set a challenging target of 211/6, bolstered by a 61-run knock from Abhishek Sharma, an unbeaten 51 from Tilak Varma, and a valuable 27 from Shivam Dube. Pakistan’s response was anchored by Hasan Nawaz, who produced a standout performance with 96 runs.

Despite Pakistan’s efforts to stay in the hunt, India managed to regain control during the final two overs. Key contributions from bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Shivam Dube ensured that India held their nerve to secure the win. The victory confirms India’s successful defense of their Asian Games title, concluding a match that remained competitive until the closing stages.
