After four years away from the captaincy, Root believes he has gained valuable insights that will enhance his leadership. “The last four years have been probably four of the most enjoyable of my career,” he stated, highlighting how this time allowed him to view the game from a different perspective. Root also expressed his disappointment regarding the departure of Brendan McCullum as Test coach, crediting him for significantly enhancing his performance. “I was gutted when I found out Brendan was no longer going to be the Test coach,” he admitted, acknowledging the positive influence McCullum had on his game. Despite this setback, Root is looking forward to collaborating with new Test coach Stephen Fleming, whom he has long admired.
