Lack of Strategy and Communication Criticised
The former Australian fast bowler did not hold back when discussing the current state of Pakistan's selection policy. Gillespie highlighted the case of Salman Ali Agha, who went from captaining the side in the first Test to being dropped and sent home before the third match, as evidence of a lack of long-term planning. He suggested that the selection committee, under Javed's leadership, lacks a coherent strategy and frequently alters its approach without clear justification.
Beyond the tactical confusion, Gillespie raised serious concerns regarding the lack of professional communication between the management and the squad. Reports indicate that several players were not directly informed of their exclusion, instead learning of their fate through social media posts and messages from friends and family. Gillespie described this lack of direct engagement as disrespectful to the players, whose livelihoods are directly impacted by such decisions.
Javed's Allegations and the Path Forward
Gillespie also addressed recent comments made by Aaqib Javed, who had attempted to shift the blame for the team's current struggles onto Gillespie and former white-ball coach Gary Kirsten. Gillespie dismissed these claims, noting that Javed has served as the chairman of selectors for the past two years and should instead focus on his own performance. He suggested that Javed needs to reflect on his own role in the current instability rather than pointing fingers at former staff members who are no longer with the team.
The fallout follows a difficult start to the three-match series, where Pakistan suffered an innings and 103-run defeat at Headingley, followed by a 194-run loss at Lord's. In response to the 2-0 deficit, the PCB has recalled seven players, including Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Ali Agha, Ali Usman, Khurram Shahzad, Aamir Jamal, and Awais Zafar. Mike Hesson and Ashley Noffke have been brought in to oversee the team for the third Test in Birmingham, which is scheduled to commence on September 9.
