Gurnoor Brar Embraces Heavy Workload After Impressive Rise in Indian Pace Ranks

Gurnoor Brar is quickly establishing himself as a formidable presence in the Indian pace bowling ranks, demonstrating both physical resilience and a hunger for high-volume bowling. The 25-year-old pacer, who recently transitioned from an international tour to domestic duties, is prioritising consistent match practice as he looks to cement his place in the national setup.

Brar’s recent form has been marked by a series of impactful displays across different formats. After making his ODI debut against Afghanistan in June, where he claimed three wickets, he delivered a dominant performance for India 'A' in July, securing a 10-wicket match haul against Sri Lanka 'A' in Galle. Despite the travel demands, he immediately joined his Duleep Trophy side, taking four wickets in the first innings against South Zone on a challenging surface at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

A Philosophy of Endurance and Growth

For Brar, the physical toll of a relentless schedule is not a concern but rather a necessary component of his development. Adopting an old-school approach to fast bowling, he maintains that the body adapts to the rigours of the game through consistent exertion. He noted that while recovery is part of the planning, he believes that pushing his physical limits is the key to becoming a stronger, more effective bowler.

This mindset has been bolstered by his recent exposure to the senior Indian team environment. Having earned a maiden Test call-up for the Afghanistan match and participated in the Sri Lanka tour, Brar has spent the last three months observing established stars like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna. He credits this period with helping him refine his ability to maintain consistent lengths across varied playing conditions.

Learning from the Senior Setup

Reflecting on his growth, Brar highlighted the influence of head coach Gautam Gambhir and bowling coach Morne Morkel, alongside his senior teammates. He emphasised that the most valuable takeaway from working with players like Bumrah has been the importance of sticking to his natural strengths while learning to adapt to different surfaces.

With 30 wickets across nine matches in the last two Ranji Trophy seasons and 11 wickets in his six ODIs to date, Brar’s trajectory remains upward. As he continues to gain experience at the highest level, his focus remains on sustained performance and the application of the technical lessons learned from the senior pros, ensuring he remains ready whenever the next opportunity arises.
