Reviving a Historic Cricketing Tradition
The return of the Ranji Trophy to the Brabourne Stadium ends a hiatus of more than three years for the venue, which last hosted a first-class match between Mumbai and Maharashtra in January 2023. The stadium holds a storied place in Indian cricket history, having hosted more Ranji Trophy finals—16 in total—than any other ground in the country.
The arrangement was facilitated through discussions between Railways head coach Syed Zakaria Zuffri and the CCI cricket committee. Mayank Khandwala, vice-chairman of the CCI Cricket Committee, expressed pride in the partnership, noting that the return of the tournament is a significant moment for the club’s heritage. The CCI is currently upgrading its infrastructure, with plans to commission new floodlights at the stadium between October 10 and 15.

For Railways, the move to Mumbai represents a fresh start following a challenging 2025-26 campaign, where they finished fourth in Elite Group C and failed to progress beyond the league stage. The team, which boasts two Ranji Trophy titles from the 2001-02 and 2004-05 seasons, will look to leverage the historic surroundings of the Brabourne Stadium to improve their domestic standing.
The inclusion of these matches is part of a broader resurgence of major cricket at the CCI. Earlier this month, the International Cricket Council confirmed that the Brabourne Stadium will serve as a host venue for the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in February 2027. With these fixtures, the club aims to continue its legacy as a premier destination for both domestic and international cricket.
