Pursuing a Test debut
Reflecting on his ambitions, Arshdeep noted that his preparation is geared toward being ready for the rigors of the longest format. Having carried both red and white balls in his kit bag throughout his career, he views every first-class opportunity as a vital step toward earning a Test cap. His last red-ball appearance prior to the current season came during the previous Duleep Trophy campaign.
The pacer’s journey toward the Test arena has faced setbacks, most notably when he received a maiden call-up for India’s tour of England last year. A hand injury sustained ahead of the fourth Test prevented him from making his debut, a moment that remains a significant hurdle in his career trajectory. Since his first-class debut in December 2019, he has accumulated 91 T20I and 18 ODI appearances but continues to await his first opportunity in the whites.
Building on experience
Arshdeep’s commitment to red-ball cricket is further evidenced by his 2023 stint with Kent in county cricket, where he sought to experience the demands of the English domestic circuit. He maintains that the guidance from the Indian team management has been consistent: to perform whenever the opportunity arises and remain prepared for a future call-up.
With the North Zone victory in the quarterfinal secured, Arshdeep is now turning his attention to the upcoming semifinal against South Zone, which is scheduled to begin on Sunday. He intends to use the match as another platform to showcase his endurance and skill over longer spells, continuing his push for national selection in the Test format.
