Ajay Jadeja critiques Arshdeep Singh’s ‘greedy’ finish despite four-wicket haul against New Zealand

Former India captain Ajay Jadeja has offered a balanced assessment of Arshdeep Singh’s performance in the opening ODI against New Zealand, praising the left-arm pacer’s impact while highlighting a lapse in judgment during the final stages of his spell. India secured a commanding five-wicket victory at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday, November 4, in a match reduced to 32 overs per side due to rain.

While Arshdeep emerged as the standout bowler for India, claiming 4/70, his figures were significantly impacted by a final over that leaked 23 runs, including three sixes from New Zealand tailender Blair Tickner. Jadeja suggested that the bowler’s desire to secure a five-wicket haul clouded his decision-making during that closing sequence.

Jadeja highlights the pursuit of milestones

Reflecting on the match, Jadeja noted that Arshdeep had been highly effective throughout his initial overs, conceding only 40-odd runs while picking up his four wickets. According to the former cricketer, the pacer became overly focused on achieving a five-wicket haul, a goal Arshdeep himself acknowledged after the game as a personal ambition. Jadeja described this mindset as being slightly greedy, noting that the pursuit of the final wicket led to an uncharacteristically expensive finish.

Despite the late runs, Arshdeep’s contribution remains significant. By taking four wickets in the match, he joined an elite list of Indian fast bowlers to achieve such figures in an ODI on New Zealand soil, placing him alongside Javagal Srinath and Mohammed Shami. Jadeja emphasized that the expensive final over should not detract from the value Arshdeep adds to the squad, particularly as a left-arm option alongside Jasprit Bumrah, noting that the increased competition for spots in the bowling attack is a positive development for Indian cricket.

Praise for Anshul Kamboj’s resurgence

The match also saw a standout performance from Anshul Kamboj, who was named Player of the Match after delivering an economical spell of 2/22 from his 10 overs. Jadeja was quick to commend the youngster, noting a marked improvement in his pace, consistency, and accuracy compared to his previous outings.

Addressing earlier criticisms regarding Kamboj’s pace and discipline during his Test debut against England in 2025, Jadeja suggested that fatigue from a heavy workload may have hampered the bowler’s performance at that time. He observed that the consistency displayed in Auckland proved that the young bowler has made significant strides in his execution. With India successfully chasing a revised target of 143 in 22.4 overs, anchored by Virat Kohli’s 74 and a 113-run partnership with Shubman Gill, the team has taken an early lead in the five-match series.
