Sreeshankar and Solomon Advance to Asian Games Long Jump Final

Indian athletes Murali Sreeshankar and David Patturaj Solomon have successfully qualified for the men's long jump final at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. The duo secured their places following strong performances during Sunday's qualification rounds, keeping India’s medal hopes alive in the field events.

Sreeshankar led the charge for the contingent by finishing second in Group B with a best leap of 7.84 metres. His teammate, David Solomon, also performed well in Group A, recording a best jump of 7.62 metres to finish third in his group and earn his spot in the final.

Strong Showing on the Track and Mixed Results in Combat Sports

The success extended to the track, where Vithya Ramraj and Anu Raghavan both advanced to the women's 400m hurdles final. Both athletes finished second in their respective heats, with Ramraj clocking a season-best time of 55.73 seconds, while Raghavan achieved a new personal best of 55.84 seconds.

However, the day proved challenging for the Indian Kurash team, which saw several early exits. Vishal was defeated 5-0 in the men's 90kg quarterfinals by Thailand's Kunathip Yea-On. In the women's competition, Sangita Balhara fell 10-0 to the Philippines' Charmea Quelino in the round of 32. Further setbacks occurred in the round of 16, where Bharti lost 3-0 to Iran's Tahereh Azarpeivand, and Yash Kumar was defeated 10-0 by Tajikistan's Shakarmamad Mirmamadov.

Decathlon Standings and Marathon Race Walk Updates

In the decathlon, Tejaswin Shankar has slipped from the top of the leaderboard to third place following the discus throw event. Shankar had entered the day in a strong position, having earned 932 points with a third-place finish in the 110m hurdles, clocking 14.33 seconds to reach 5,270 points overall. However, a best throw of 36.77 metres in the discus—four metres shy of his personal best—left him with 5,869 points, placing him behind competitors from China and Japan. He now faces the pole vault and javelin throw, events noted as outside his primary strengths.

Elsewhere, the women's marathon race walk saw mixed fortunes for India. Manju Rani finished in sixth place with a time of 3:40:17, while Priyanka Goswami was disqualified from the event after passing the 9km mark.
